About Me |
My Story
I attended the University of Missouri at Columbia for medical school, completed my internal medicine residency training at Loyola University Medical Center and I completed my gastroenterology fellowship at Saint Louis University Hospital. I am now a private practice gastroenterologist at Esse Health, in St. Louis. I perform inpatient and outpatient endoscopies and I treat a variety of GI, pancreatic, biliary and liver diseases.
Medical training is long, challenging and ultimately rewarding. But it can also be an isolating experience, because many of your friends and family are unable to relate to your experiences. Since October of 2020, I have found that by making videos showcasing the exciting, intimidating and (most of all) comical elements of my training, other trainees from around the country and even around the world can relate. By validating the challenges of medical school, highlighting the absurdity of residency training, and exploring the comedy in fellowship training, individuals at these stages can hopefully find a sense of community and comfort.
At the same time, other healthcare professionals and even patients have been able to enjoy these videos because they often show a perspective of being a physician that is rarely seen or discussed. It has become my goal to try and make videos that are not only funny and educational but also made in such a way that individuals from all walks of life can hopefully appreciate, whether they are a medical student preparing for their next test or an anxious 45 year old prepping for her first colonoscopy.
I originally started making videos way back in middle school and over the years have created an incredibly random portfolio of videos ranging from slapstick comedy skits to school projects. In October of 2020, while cooped up at home with a week of vacation during the second COVID lockdown, I decided to launch my DocSchmidt persona. This started with lots of silly TikTok videos where I would tell stories of prior experiences, make skits about my residency interactions with other specialties, and even make short educational videos about interesting GI topics. In the years since, I have hundreds of videos across YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, Facebook and Twitter, with hundreds of millions of views and over 1.2 million followers in total. It has been an amazing journey and I cannot wait for the next stage. Thanks for reading and I hope you enjoy!
